Why not both? As someone who actually works with the poor and homeless, daily, I’m a little miffed at the above sentiment. I can hold several ideas in my head at once, thanks.
All good points and I agree with you completely. My problem was mostly with people who clearly don’t hold both ideas at once. For example I have this old high school classmate on facebook who never once had anything to say about economic issues here in America and who was an avid supporter of Mitt Romney during the 2012 election. But as soon as there was a buzz about economic disparity in a nation run by brown people he started posting article after article on Brasil and was talking like an econ PhD. I’ve seen so many people recently who have never criticized the institutions that hold so many Americans in poverty and are now jumping up and down to vilify Brasil as the most horrendous country ever. The divide as I see it is nationalistic and racially motivated.
