The controversy over who shot first, Greedo or Han Solo, in Episode IV, what I did was try to clean up the confusion, but obviously it upset people because they wanted Solo to be a cold-blooded killer, but he actually isn’t. It had been done in all close-ups and it was confusing about who did what to whom. I put a little wider shot in there that made it clear that Greedo is the one who shot first, but everyone wanted to think that Han shot first, because they wanted to think that he actually just gunned him down.
George Lucas says Han never shot first, you were just confused | Film | Newswire | The A.V. Club (via kaijuu)
-and again, I think Lucas misses the point on how people see Han.
He’s not a cold blooded character, nor does anybody think that. Han was the kind of guy that would protect himself if provoked or threatened. The fact we start off Han as this type of scrapper/rougue all lends itself to when he finally gets past his need to protect only himself and grows into a “hero” – one who self sacrifices and looks beyond helping only himself. This way he can love Leia, and be a true friend to Luke, all the while helping the Rebels for the greater good. It makes an impact in his character arch.
Mistake or not, having Han shoot first is a great set-up for Han’s transformation.
