I am asking people just for fun to reblog this or repost this, whatever, with an image from the very first comic they read that they absolutely loved.

Just any image from the FIRST comic that made you want to be a comics reader, please.

Any comments you have about the issue are most welcome!

Somewhere around Legion Quest/AoA.

The premise hooked me in. the beautiful covers and amazing storytelling kept me going

X-Men 294. The year is 1992, I’ve just become hooked on a new cartoon called X-Men and must know more about my new friends. I convince my parents that letting me buy comics is good because I’ll be reading – little do they know they start me on a path that will lead me to spend literally tens of thousands of dollars on becoming the emotionally stunted man-child I am today. This is as good a jumping-on point as any, starting the X-cutioner’s Song crossover arc and requiring very little background knowledge to follow.

It’s vintage early 90’s x-men all the way, and puts Professor X in enough peril that it almost convinces an eleven year old that Marvel might kill him off. Charles gets a nice speech about tolerance and prejudice before he’s shot with a techno-organic virus bullet thingamajig. Cable and Cyclops make lots of Rob Liefeld-esque ‘X’ poses – but this is not Liefeld’s work, just his legacy – as this was after Image comics had been formed.

At the time, I thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen, and quickly became a raving comic junkie, making sure to get every tie-in and spin off I could. Looking back, it isn’t the most amazing of books, but it’s solid enough. Additionally, it’s slow pace and 12-issue arc allow lots of time for the characters to show themselves off and display their personalities – a good primer for people new to this era of X-titles.
