As part of the Top Gear Live world tour, the hosts of the wildly popular BBC show went to Johannesburg, South Africa, where they were surprised to learn that Nelson Mandela wanted to meet them. “For the life of us, we simply couldn’t work out why the greatest living statesman would want to waste his precious time with two Top Gear presenters and their piggy-eyed promoter,” writes Jeremey Clarkson. “And, worse, what on earth would we talk about?” Simple. Clarkson decided to do the obvious and ask Mandela whether he had “ever been to a lap-dancing club.” No, he hadn’t. Mandela then diplomatically followed up with: “So, what was it like on the moon?” Rather than tell “the world’s one living saint” that he had them confused for someone else, Clarkson told him “it was very rocky and dusty and there was not much gravity” as his co-host looked on in disbelief.
